Loossemble has been on a consistent roll since their debut, already releasing three mini albums in under a year. Their recent comeback for their third mini album, TTYL, commenced on September 2. TTYL consists of six songs, and the members, Hyunjin, Vivi, Gowon, Hyeju, and Yeojin, utilize compelling lyrics to showcase their growth as artists and individuals while embracing a more mature sound.
The album begins with “FANATICISM,” an instrumental track that flows into the album’s title track, “TTYL.” “FANATICISM” flips the production listeners will hear on the next track, creating a more electronic and mysterious sound. Over the packed instrumental, there are short verses from the chorus to “TTYL” looming, giving a sneak peek at what is expected.
The title track, “TTYL,” short for “Talk To You Later,” is a vibrant electro-pop and synth-filled song where the members express emotions often associated with prospective love. The song is self-reflective, as the members discuss some frantic feelings they had while trying to talk to a crush. The music video tells a different story, taking a more mystical fantasy approach. Loossemble seems to be escaping the grasp of a rival group before becoming entranced by them in the end.
The seamless connection between multiple songs on this mini album does stop in the first third of the project. Although they serve as two separate unit songs, “Cotton Candy” and “Confessions” intersect sonically as though they are singular. Vivi, Hyeju, and Yeojin balance each other on the fun dance-pop record “Cotton Candy,” which highlights their phenomenal vocal abilities and features a crisp rap verse from Hyeju. The women express their delight with a lover who they compare to the sweetness of candy. The music video shows the women spending time together while enjoying sweet treats at a cafe. Hyunjin, Gowon, and Yeojin join forces on the melodious retro pop song “Confessions.” They embrace a more sultry side in the song as they wear their hearts on their sleeves and promise to reveal every aspect of themselves to someone they love.
A groovy city pop track with a sound reminiscent of the 1980s, “Hocus Pocus” shows the members contemplating love. Although the track is extremely upbeat and filled with drums and guitar, the feelings expressed throughout reveal inner conflict. Similar to “TTYL,” the lyrics express both excitement and nervousness about the potential of developing a romantic connection, this time with a friend. Although they enjoy this friend’s company and are aware of that person’s feelings of affection, they are unsure if they view their friend romantically.
“Friends or love? / A strange something to fall in love / I’m still scared / Will you wait for me babe,” Loossemble sings.
The members leave listeners curious about hidden secrets with the mini album’s impressive closer, “Secret Diary.” Along with the mystery within the lyrics, the stunning harmonies, and multi-layered production, which combine strings with a trap-influenced beat, create an alluring atmosphere.
Through the songs on TTYL, Loossemble embraces an advanced, unified sound with different blends of genres and vocal styles. The sonic flow of the EP gave it an enchanting feel, making it an enjoyable listen from start to finish. Fans in the United States can enjoy seeing Loossemble perform live in cities nationwide on their upcoming tour, Loossemble 2024 Concert in U.S Up_Link Station.
