K-pop category created in YouTube

The world’s largest online video sharing service, YouTube, has revealed that they are adding K-pop to its music category as a genre on December 15.

This will be the first time that a country’s specific music is listed separately as a genre. Eric Schmidt visited Korea on November 7 where this was discussed as a part of the Korea Go Global project.

Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Google Korea created a business agreement to promote Korean culture and contents. YouTube is playing a big role in promoting Korean culture globally.

Korea Go Global project has the core goal of pushing premium contents created in Korea, globally to strengthen its position.

Yum Dong Hoo, Google Korea’s CEO, says, “I’m so glad that YouTube has become the best partner for K-pop when it’s widely spreading to the world. K-pop’s popularity is so great that it is now added to the music category of YouTube as a separate music genre. We are planning to cooperate with YouTube in various parts so that it can be a channel for Korean culture, including K-pop, to spread to the world as the real Korea Go Global.”
