[Exclusive] AOMG Takes Over Belasco Theater in Los Angeles

Nov 30, 2014 0

Jay Park at AOMG L.A.

On November 14, popular Korean hip-hop record label AOMG (Above Ordinary Music Group) commenced its three-city U.S. tour in Los Angeles, at the Belasco Theater in Downtown.  AOMG was founded in late September 2013 by former idol-turned-solo-artist Jay Park who aspired to create Korea’s most distinguished hip-hop and R&B record label.  This being their first family concert in the States, Jay,  LocoGraySimon D, and DJ Pumkin made sure it would not be a day to be forgotten.

Fans at AOMG L.A.

Hip-hop fanatics from different parts of the West Coast flocked to the popular downtown venue that has previously hosted the successful Asian Music Festival back in May.  Lucky VIP holders were able to not only take a spot by the stage, but also were invited backstage for the meet-and-greet with the artists  and take photos with them.  After the meet-and-greet, AOMG’s DJ Pumkin took his place behind his sound mixer and the roar of eager screams and hollers blasted throughout the venue – the show was about to begin.

 Loco & Gray

Loco and Gray at AOMG L.A.

First to greet the anxious fans was Loco.  The rapper made his big break when he won the first season of Korea’s popular hip-hop talent show Show Me the Money and has established a strong fan base ever since.  Loco jumped on the stage and had everyone put their hands in the air as Belasco staff launched hundreds of light sticks into the crowd.  Armed and pumped, the crowd was well-equipped for the long show ahead of them.

Joining him on the stage was AOMG’s producer and artist, GrayGray serenading a fan at AOMG L.A. The charismatic rapper was one of the first artists signed to AOMG and regularly produces hot tracks for the label as well as other hip-hop artists such as Dok2 and Swings.  Together, Loco and Gray performed an array of their hit songs including “Dream Chaser”, “Hold Me Tight”, “Dangerous“, and “In My Head”.  In the middle of his performance, Gray knelt down on the front of the stage, singled out a young woman in the front, and personally serenaded the lucky fan with his rapping.

One of the most touching moments was when Loco performed “Home”, an emotional track first performed on Show Me the Money.  The song was dedicated to the rapper’s late father and the lyrics expressed his vow to repay his parents and make them proud. Less than an hour into the show, everyone in the theater were all wired up and ready for more.

 Simon D

Simon D at AOMG L.A.

Next to heat up the stage was the O.G. himself, Simon D.  No stranger to the music scene, Simon D debuted back in 2009 in the hip-hop duo Supreme Team before going solo and eventually becoming the co-CEO of AOMG.

Simon D at AOMG L.A.

He was welcomed by ear-piercing screams as soon as he got on stage.  Fans “got down” to the crowd favorite, “Simon Says” and were mesmerized by Simon D’s sick raps in “Stay Cool”, “Money Don’t Lie”, and “Where U At”.  In between songs he conversed with his fans in English, introducing himself, belting his Busan pride, and claiming that “L.A. is like my second home.”  One fan repeatedly begged him to take his shirt off, to which Simon D comically replied, “T-take it off!? No, I’m not Jay,” earning giggles from the crowd.

Jay Park

Speaking of the star, Jay Park was up next and the whole venue erupted in a chorus of fan-girl squeals as he and two backup dancers took to the stage.  Since he went solo, the singer has proved to be one of the most dedicated and hardworking artists around.

Jay was a nonstop fan-service machine, showcasing his intricate b-boy tricks that had the fans swooning as he performed with a medley of “Know Your Name”, “Body2Body”, “I Got Your Back”, and So Good”.  Then he took it down a notch and serenaded fans with “Star”.  Before jumping into his next song, he teased and stated that he was looking for a “Girlfriend” (cue the uproar from hundreds of more-than-willing fan girls.)  As if the screams could not get any louder, the fans went absolutely nuts as Jay stripped, taking his sweater and shirt off and showing off his infamous choco-abs.

Jay mentioned that he had been working on a mixtape with the intention of performing it for the first time for his L.A. fans.  Unfortunately he was unable to finish it on time due to his tight schedule, along with a severe case of jetlag.  To make up for it, he treated fans with “Count on You (Nothing on You)”, his Korean rendition of Bruno Mars’ infamous song.

Simon D and fans at AOMG L.A.

Finally, with the show coming to an end, the whole AOMG family (and friends Ben Baller and Chacha Malone) came back onstage to make sure it went out with a bang.  At this point, all the performers let loose onstage and had the whole venue up on their feet as they sang/rapped to Jay Park’s “Metronome”.

[EXCLUSIVE] Korean Celebs Attend KCON 2014 Red Carpet Event

Aug 17, 2014 0

Red Carpet - Eric Nam

Just hours until show time, Korea’s hottest actors and singers came out to meet the fans on the KCON red carpet event. Singer Eric Nam turned on the charm as he served as the English translator for the artists.

Red Carpet - Lee Seung Gi

First up on the red carpet was actor-singer Lee Seungi.  He shared that he is currently working on an upcoming romantic comedy drama where he will be playing the role of an elementary school teacher, quite a contrast from his chic role as detective Eun Daegu/Kim Jiyoung in his most recent drama, You’re All Surrounded.  He also announced that he is working on his next album that he hopes will be released sometime next year.

Red Carpet - BTS

Next up was the bulletproof boys BTS!  They were upbeat and lively as ever as they took to the stage.  The guys went down the line and showcased their English skills with “Dope!” “What’s poppin’?” “Turn Up!” and “L.A.’s so beautiful!” and so forth, creating a plethora of fangirl screams.  BTS’ leader Rap Monster then took time to rile up the fans with their upcoming first full-length album Dark & Wild, “We’ve been working so hard so it’ll be amazing. So please look forward to it!” The music video for the album’s title track, “Danger” was filmed while the group spent a couple weeks in L.A. where they immersed themselves in the hip-hop culture for their newest reality show, American Hustle Life.

Red Carpet - Lee Seo Jin

Actor Lee Seojin from the hit variety show Grandpa Over Flowers followed after.  He shared that he had just wrapped up filming for his latest drama Wonderful Days and currently has no projects planned in the new future.  After KCON he stated that he will be taking a bit of time to relax and enjoy the L.A. lifestyle with his friends.

Red Carpet - Jung Joon Young

A somewhat drowsy Jung Joon Young then took to the stage.  The rocker charmed fans with his tired yet adorable state as he responded to many of Eric’s questions with “I’m very sleepy.”  Having been raised outside of Korea for most of his life, he was able to easily communicate with the audience in English, “It was really hot today. But now it’s fine right? Have fun tonight.  Before taking his leave, he shared that he has a surprise collaboration planned for his performance later that night.  Who could it be?

Red Carpet - SPICA

The lovely ladies of SPICA arrived on the red carpet decked out in eye-catching outfits!  The quintent have been kept busy in the U.S. with the release of their first U.S. single “I Did It” only days prior to KCON.  The girls revealed that they had worked diligently for four straight days to create this single and are continuing to work on their English pronunciation.  The group also announced that they are currently working on their Korean comeback due in few months, but could not divulge any details.  So, stay tuned!

Red Carpet - CNBLUE

K-Pop’s resident rock band CNBLUE were up next and Yonghwa showed brushed up on his English as he greeted the fans, “I’m very happy to visit here. We love L.A.! Thank you so much!”  The lead singer then talked about how he is preparing for his upcoming historical drama and is growing out his hair for the role.  Jungshin shared that he is currently filming for an SBS drama called Temptation while Minhyuk and Jonghyun are diligently working on music for their upcoming album that will be released sometime next year.

Red Carpet - SNSD

Wrapping up the red carpet event was none other than Girls’ Generation!  Unfortunately, Sooyoung was unable to attend KCON due to her filming for her upcoming drama, My Spring Days.  Nonetheless, the eight remaining members were all smiles as they were happy to see their American fans once again, “It’s so nice to meet our L.A. fans once again,” said Tiffany, “we missed you so much!”  As for their comebacks, the girls announced that each will be working on their own thing such as Jessica and her newly launched fashion line, BLANC.  Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun are currently preparing for their Tatiseo comeback while Yoona announced that she has just been casted as the lead role of Annie in an upcoming movie called Goodbye Annie.  SONEs will have a lot to look forward to this coming year!

[EXCLUSIVE] KCON 2014’s 2 Nights of M Countdown Shakes Up Los Angeles

Aug 16, 2014 3

2014 Kcon 2 FULL (6)

This year, KCON surprised us with not one, but TWO nights of mind-blowing performances! Korea’s largest K-pop chart show, M Countdown, teamed up once again with North America’s largest convention dedicated to ‘All Things Hallyu’ and brought ten of Korea’s top acts – VIXXBTSB1A4, Teen TopIUG-DragonJung Joon YoungSPICACNBLUE, and Girls’ Generation. The two shows were hosted by actor Lee Seung Gi, Dumbfounded, Danny Im, and Lee Seo Jin.

Day 1

KCON veterans VIXX opened up KCON 2014 with a bang! The group was one of the first artists to be invited to perform at the first KCON convention back in 2012.  Happy to meet their fans once again, the boys performed their hit songs “Eternity,” “Only U,” “Voodoo Doll,” “Light Up the Darkness,” and “On and On.”

Second artist to grace the stage was Korea’s songbird, IU.  The angelic singer kicked off her first ever performance in L.A. with “Red Shoes,” “You and I,” “Friday (accompanied by Teen Top’s Niel), “Good Day,” and “Hey (You Know).”  Exhibiting powerful yet effortless vocals, the dainty singer blew the audience away with her infamous 3-octaves.

The ever-charismatic members of B1A4 then pumped up the crowd with “What’s Going On?,” “Lonely,” “Solo Day,” “Baby Goodnight” and closed off their set with “A Glass of Water.” Keeping up with the theme, each member armed himself with a water gun and pelted fans with a cool spritz.

To heat things back up, Teen Top started off with “Rocking,” the electro-dance track that was first revealed to the world back last year on the KCON stage. The group exhibited precision and punctuality as they performed their other upbeat tracks, “Crazy,” “Miss Right,” “To You,” and “Rock Star.”

Wrapping up the night was none other than the charismatic G-Dragon.  The whole arena erupted in ear piercing screams as everyone rose and chanted his name as he performed his killer tracks, “One of a Kind,” “Crooked,” “Who You?,” “Crayon,” and “Michigo.”  The influential rapper undoubtedly commanded the stage with his swagger and showmanship, ending Day 1 of KCON 2014 and leaving fans asking for more.

BTS set the bar for Day 2 with their stellar performance.  The hip-hop rookie-dols showcased their synchronization and versatility while faithful A.R.M.Y.s sang along to ” Boy in Luv,” “No More Dream,” “We are Bulletproof (Pt. 2),” I Like It,” and “Rise of Bangtan.”  This marks the group’s second time in L.A. after coming here last month and unexpectedly filmed their own reality show, American Hustle Life, which is currently airing on MNET.

Jung Joon Young

Next, Korean rocker Jung Joon Young belted his heart out with “Teenager,” “The Sense of an Ending,” “Hold On,” “From Me to Me,” and a special rock cover of the legendary Michael Jackson’s song “Black or White” alongside BTS’ leader, Rap Monster.  While most rockers would just stay by their mic stand and strum their guitars, Joon Young and Rap Monster got down and shimmied around the stage, showcasing their best Michael Jackson moves they could muster up.

Up-and-coming girl group, Spica, wowed the crowd with their amazing vocals while performing “You Don’t Love Me,” “Tonight,” “Painkiller,” a cover of Backstreet Boys’ “No Diggity,” and their new U.S. single, “I Did It.”  The girls have caught the attention of many top American producers and have big plans in store for them in terms of international promotions.  Definitely keep an eye out for this talented group!

Following SPICA’s performance was one of Korea’s most beloved bands, CNBLUE! The boys had flown into L.A. from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia only hours before their performance yet showed no signs of fatigue or jet lag as they rocked out onstage.  The band had BOICEs jumping up and down for their favorite songs such as “Can’t Stop,” “I’m a Loner,” “Intuition,” and “Love Love Love.”

Finally, what many SONEs had been waiting all throughout the night for, Girls’ Generation sparkled and shined onstage while performing Kpop’s game-changing songs like “Genie,” “Mr. Mr.,” “Mr. Taxi,” “Hoot” and everyone’s favorite, “Gee.”  The girls’ (sans Sooyoung) had recently celebrated their 7th year anniversary and expressed their gratefulness to their fans by treating them with an acapella version of their debut song, “Into the New World.”

What made KCON amazing for many was the diversity of artists.  Some fans attended KCON with only knowing one or two groups, but by the end of the night, became a fan of all of them.  “I honestly came only for G-Dragon.” said one fan, “But, wow, after watching everyone else perform, I’m gonna go home and look them up!”  KCON brought together fans of all ages and delivered another phenomenal event that any K-pop fan could ask for.

[EXCLUSIVE] KCON 2014 Doubles Attendance – Personal Best

KCON 2014 13

KCON, North America’s largest convention dedicated to All Things Hallyu cranked up the heat as this summer’s hottest K-pop festival! The convention returned to Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in Downtown Los Angeles and drew in over 42,000 attendees, doubling last year’s head count, along with over 130 special guests participating in interactive workshops, panels, and more.

Ddeokbokki, Korean barbecue, Korean beauty products, and K-pop posters all conveniently sold in one place? Yes, please. KCON’s open admission market was buzzing with hungry fans and plenty of awesome deals. Some of the participating food and retail shops were IOTA BREW CAFÉ, School Food, The Face Shop, and TEA & CUP. CJ Entertainment also set up a little market next to the vendors, which included a Get It Beauty booth, Tous les Jours, and CGV Cinemas.

Actress Yoo In Na, famous for her roles in You Who Came from the Stars and Secret Garden, and Jaekyung from Rainbow appeared as special guests at the Get It Beauty booth, even giving one-on-one makeup advice and gifts. Eric Nam, a Korean-American soloist and host of After School Club, even held selfie sessions for fans at the Viki booth.

KCON 2014 2

When fans were not busy stuffing their faces with Korean street food or playing games at the booths, they were listening or watching live performances on the market’s outdoor stage. Finalists of SUPERSTAR KCON battled it out onstage as singers and dancers alike showed their stuff in order to win the prize of $5,000. Special performers including Nomntom & MeToo, DANakaDAN, Jung Sung Ahn,and many more rocked out with the con-goers.

KCON 2014 5

KCON 2nd con (135)

Panels with our favorite Youtube artists, bloggers, and even a League of Legends workshop! This year’s KCON convention had fans walking from panel, to dance tent, to workshop with so many exciting sessions offered. Lee Luda and Kim Myung Gyu from Mnet’s #1 dance survival program, Dancing 9, appeared as special guests at the dance tent, generously taking photos with fans and even teaching them step-by-step of EXO’s “Growl” choreography. Programs offered at the panels included various meet-and-greets with local artists, discussions about the influence of K-dramas, and even a crash course in the Korean language!

BTS Fan Engagement

KCON helped bring fans closer to their favorite idols through fan engagement opportunities!  The biggest woe of being an international K-pop fan was the inability to see your favorite artists up close and personal.  To cater to their feels, KCON implemented a voucher system in which lucky fans could win a hi-touch, autograph signing, audience viewing, or red carpet engagement vouchers to grant fans’ wishes.

KCON 2014 10

If you were unable to win any vouchers, no fear!  Fans were still able to catch glimpse of their favorite artists on MNET America’s Danny From L.A. which was being filmed live during the convention.  K-pop idol groups such as VIXX, B1A4, and BTS took time out of their busy rehearsals to briefly hang out and meet their fans while also participating in some games with Danny and Dumbfoundead.

[EXCLUSIVE] SPICA’s L.A. Press Conference

Aug 14, 2014 0

Girl group SPICA had many firsts this month with the release of their first English single “I Did It” and their first performance in the U.S. at the 3rd annual Hallyu convention, KCON. The day the single was released, SPICA held a press conference and fan meet at Area DNA in San Gabriel, CA where they shared their future plans and answered some fan questions.

SPICA - Jiwon

The Los Angeles weather, scenery, and overall laid-back atmosphere left a great impression on the girls. When asked what type of food they wish to eat while here, the girls expressed just how much they love to chow down. “We really like to eat meat,” said Juhyun, “and the meat in Korea is pretty expensive. But in the U.S., meat is pretty cheap and we can even afford to eat stuff like steak every day.Jiwon added in, “Our friends all recommended In-N-Out, I really want to try it!

SPICA shared their eagerness in promoting abroad and announced that they are planning on releasing a Mandarin version of “I Did It” to break out into the Chinese music scene. Music composer and director Nathan Wang was in attendance and announced that he will be assisting the girls with the song, “I believe the girls will be successful in China.

When asked about their ideal types, the girls each had varying tastes – Boa, for example, likes handsome, model material men, while Juhyun is interested in guys with good fashion sense. Bohyung heartily stated that her ideal type is similar to actor-singer Takeshi Kaneshiro while Narae said she likes courageous guys like Taiwanese singer Jay Chou.

SPICA wrapped up the press conference by treating the audience with a live performance of “I Did It.”
